Today is National Doughnut Day…but you still need to pay some dough for one… get it?

Once again–it seems like a random National Day, but it’s been around since 1938. The story is that in 1917, during WW1, women at the Salvation Army cooked up donuts (in oil using soldiers’ helmets?!?) up at the front lines. So they created National Doughnut Day to celebrate those women who volunteered during WW1. But wait, there’s more.

The holiday in 1938 was also a fundraiser–this was during the Great Depression, a time in America where jobs and money were not easy to get. Pretty cool, huh?

The Salvation Army is still going strong today–it’s a great example of people volunteering and working to help out others who are in need. Volunteering to help other people, donating time–these are all part of our calling as Christians. How can you help?

One more fun fact: American soldiers were nicknamed “doughboys”… so you can guess where the name “doughnut” came from.

If we can encourage others, we should encourage them. If we can give, we should be generous. If we are leaders, we should do our best. If we are good to others, we should do it cheerfully.
