Fun fact about squirrels #2: when squirrels sense danger, they twitch their tails to signal other squirrels. And we just thought it was cute.

Chipmunks are related to squirrels–you know what chipmunks are known for right? Stuffing their cheeks with food. They need to store up and keep food around even more than some other animals during winter because they need it around to eat. They don’t hibernate the same way as some animals, so they rely on their stashes.

We are told to not worry about saving up things. But most of us are pretty bad at that, right? I know most of us like our houses, toys, cars, clothes–how attached are you to your favorite baseball glove, or that stuffed bear your grandma gave you?

Of course it doesn’t mean we can’t love these things, but we need to keep perspective. If we are putting more importance on the things we have instead of the people around us, or people in the world who could use our help–that’s when we need to evaluate things.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

Dear Lord, Thank you for giving me what I need for the day. Help me to not love my things too much, and to see how to help other people around me. Amen.
