Did you ever watch Sesame Street? Do you know Count von Count, the vampire who loves to count? Fun fact: there is an old legend that vampires have an obsession with counting–it’s called arithmomania, and it means that vampires (if they existed) can’t help but count things around them.

There are actually a lot of numbers and counting in the Bible–some parts like 1 Chronicles 1 is basically a looooonng list of names–it’s giving the genealogy of Jesus, genealogy is his family tree. These lists can get a little long and a little boring, but they are important. God is showing us his plan–how he sent Jesus–his parents, back hundreds of years.

God shows us how families are important, how each individual person is important, and he shows the story of how he sent Jesus. These details help prove the reality of our Lord.

This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

Matthew 1: 1-2 (NIV)

Dear Lord, thank you for the stories of how Jesus came to save me. Amen.
